Type Works V.8 'Household Keys'

A hardwood box containing four microscopic slide frames and an assemblage of twelve key finger plates from a c.1930 Underwood typewriter, mounted on springs. This box is part of a series inspired by the iconic mechanical typewriters of the early 20th century, 'play' with the idea of portable devices and our visual memories of what constitutes a typewriter.

Intrigued by the possibilities of Box Art as a student, Robert Lee was introduced to this artistic community in 1995 by a travelling exhibition entitled ‘Worlds in a Box’. Fifteen years later, inspired by two works of literature, he began creating works of his own as a response to the rich spatial imagery and descriptions of place and object found in prose.
