Jayne’s work is created from a blend of recycled shredded paper and white stoneware clay. The paper pulp gives the clay strength and an inherent texture which allows it to be ripped, thus creating irregular edges. This process allows the pulp to be drawn or embossed as normal paper. When the pieces are fired the paper burns out and only the clay and the markings remain. Copper and galvanised steel wires are added to the work after the firing.
A subtle earthy palette of glazes and oxides are applied to represent a relationship between line and form through a combination of mark-making and layering effects.
Jayne’s work is based on her love of aerial landscapes, the inspiration of which has been drawn from her observations made during travels through large land masses, the boundaries of which, when viewed from the air become ‘obvious’ but ‘blurred and ragged.’ Even though many of them are man-made, in this context they emphasize the interaction between humans and the natural environment.
